Load monitoring & controlling using GPRS / RS 232 in industries

Abstract:

Today’s power measurement applications demand that energy meters be both intelligent and powerful to satisfy the challenges of a competitive marketplace. The AMR (Automatic meter Reading) meter meets these requirements and more with a digital-based, revenue accuracy metering solution for your Commercial, Industrial, Distribution, Transmission and Generation metering applications.

This system includes an optional RS232 or RS485 serial data port that provides remote communications capabilities with the meter’s register and recorder for AMR billing data retrieval, distribution automation, system monitoring, on-line diagnostics and remote programming.

The serial data port can be interfaced with a variety of compatible communications technologies that include Cellular, PCS, Fiber Optic, external Modem and SCADA.

Operation:

The analog signals of voltage and current components are tapped from the secondary side of the transformer using potential and current transformer respectively. These analog signals are converted into discrete data using A/D converter. The discrete data is fed into micro-controller for calculating the maximum demand.

The calculated value is displayed continuously using the display. The maximum demand is defined as the product of the voltage and the current that has been consumed by the loads. The value of the maximum demand varies for various sub-stations depending upon the load.

The Cumulative Maximum Demand is the instantaneous average value of maximum demand. If the maximum demand exceeds the pre-defined value immediately a command is given to the device through GPRS connectivity.

Micro controller is interfaced with the LCD display and keyboard for user convenience. RTC (Real Time Clock) is used to run the Date and time and it will be displayed on the LCD. Application software is developed and status of AMR is updated and immediate action can also be taken.
